Editorial Policy
The AASFAA Advocate is the primary means of communication with all association members. Its purpose is to inform the membership of association activities, to provide federal legislative and regulatory updates, to provide a space for comments on the trends in financial aid from members of the profession, and to provide information that the Newsletter Committee deems beneficial to the membership at large. While AASFAA is supportive of the many vendors and sponsors, newsletter articles are not designed to enable vendors to promote products and services, except through paid advertisements. All articles will be edited by the AASFAA Newsletter Committee for appropriateness for the general membership. Each issue of the AASFAA Advocate will be reviewed and approved prior to final production by the Newsletter Committee and the current AASFAA President. Questions regarding this policy should be addressed to the Editor.

President's Letter

Greetings,

As my year is winding down, I thought I would give you some statistical information about AASFAA this year.

Did you know that:

  • AASFAA has 115 active member institutions and over 400 individual members.
  • 395 individuals took advantage of the two state conferences. 87 were first time attendees. (That’s awesome!)
  • 130 individuals attended our free Membership Training Workshops throughout the state.
  • Four AASFAA scholarships were awarded for our Fall Conference, and four for the Spring Conference, but only three winners were able to attend. Two scholarships were awarded to attend the WASFAA Summer Institute in Idaho.
  • Nine scholarships were given to members to attend WASFAA in Hawaii and did you know that out of those nine people, six of them had never attended a WASFAA Conference before? (I don’t know about you, but that gives me goose bumps.) Some of these individuals have been in financial aid for more than 15 years and they have dedicated a significant amount of their time to serve AASFAA.
  • One person went to the NASFAA Leadership Conference in Washington DC.
  • There were record-breaking sponsorship/vendors at both conferences. The Fall Conference had 28 vendors and the Spring Conference had 32. I am sorry to say we had to turn away a couple of vendors for the Spring Conference because there was no more room.
  • Fiscal Planning and Development raised $73,000 in sponsorships this year.
  • 11 people were nominated for office for 2004-05 year and 67 ballots were received. A little over half of the members voted. That is excellent!!
  • There were 150 volunteers, site coordinators, and regional coordinators through out the state for College Goal Sunday. We helped 2621 students and parents fill out their FAFSAs for next year.
  • 51 volunteers served on the 13 committees.
  • An ad-hoc committee was created to automate the Financial Needs Analysis between the students, tribes, and schools. During the Spring Conference two more tribes joined this project bringing the total to 5 major tribes and 10 schools. These are the test pilots and as this project gets off the ground anyone who wants to use the automated FNA will be added.
  • There were 22 committee chairs/co-chairs. Twelve of them were new chair/co-chairs.
  • There were 10 board members and for 4 of them it was a first time to ever serve on the AASFAA Board.

You can see the tremendous amount of involvement from the members in our association. We can keep records of how much money we have and spend, but we can never keep records of all the in-kind support and the countless hours people give to this association. For those of you who are considering being part of the AASFAA family, please don’t hesitate. JOIN!!! We are always looking for new members to assist the committees. It is a very rewarding experience.

I want to THANK all of you for giving me the opportunity of being your President this year. I also want to THANK my board and committee chairs for all their hard work and wonderful ideas. Everyone went above and beyond the call of duty.

I wish Brad Honious, his board, and committee chairs the best this coming year. I know they will do great.

Gratefully yours,
Pat Peppin
